The Wegovy pill and Rybelsus: how the two semaglutide tablets differ

Adults considering Wegovy pills for weight loss in Dubai and the wider UAE may also hear about Rybelsus. Both tablets contain semaglutide and are available in the UAE. Each is taken once a day on an empty stomach.

They are, however, different medications with different purposes, doses and approvals. Confusing the two can lead to misunderstandings about what each tablet is prescribed for and what results to expect.

What the Wegovy pill is prescribed for

The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) is a weight management medication. The Emirates Drug Establishment authorised it on 1 June 2026. The approval covers long-term weight management in adults living with obesity, and in adults with overweight who also have weight-related medical conditions.

The Emirates Drug Establishment release also cites a reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in high-risk patients. Treatment moves through doses of 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg before reaching 25 mg, spending at least 30 days at each level.

OASIS 4, a Phase 3 trial, tested the Wegovy pill in adults with obesity or overweight. Participants on the highest dose had lost around 17% of their starting weight on average after 64 weeks. This is broadly similar to the average weight loss seen with the 2.4 mg Wegovy injection.

What Rybelsus is prescribed for

Rybelsus is a semaglutide tablet for type 2 diabetes. In the US, the prescribing information for Rybelsus describes its use in adults with type 2 diabetes, together with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control. It is not licensed for weight management. In the UAE, Rybelsus is available for type 2 diabetes only.

Treatment starts with 3 mg once daily for 30 days. This starting dose is not intended to control blood sugar. The dose then rises to 7 mg, and to 14 mg if more control is needed after at least 30 days on 7 mg.

The US label for Rybelsus also lists a reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk.

Its main trials measured blood sugar control through HbA1c, which reflects average blood sugar over approximately the previous three months. A 26-week trial studied Rybelsus in adults with type 2 diabetes. HbA1c fell by 1.2 percentage points with 7 mg and by 1.4 points with 14 mg, against 0.3 on placebo. Body weight fell by around 2.3 kg and 3.7 kg respectively, against around 1.4 kg on placebo.

Why the two tablets are not interchangeable

Although both tablets contain semaglutide, they are separate products with separate dose ranges and approvals. A patient prescribed Rybelsus for diabetes should not switch to the Wegovy pill without a doctor’s decision. The same applies in reverse.

The Rybelsus prescribing information states that no more than one tablet should be taken a day. Even the 14 mg dose is taken as one tablet. Neither medication is taken as several tablets to reach a higher dose.

Confusing the two names at a pharmacy could lead to receiving the wrong product. Checking the name and the dose on the pack is a sensible habit.

How each semaglutide tablet is taken

The instructions for the two tablets are similar. Each is taken on an empty stomach with up to 120 mL of plain water. Food, drink and other oral medications are then delayed for at least 30 minutes. For both medications, a missed dose is skipped and the next dose is taken the following day.

The side effects are also similar, as both medications act on the GLP-1 receptor. Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation are among the effects reported, particularly in the first weeks at a new dose. In the Rybelsus prescribing information, nausea was reported by 11% of patients on 7 mg and 20% on 14 mg, against 6% on placebo.

Switching from a semaglutide injection to a tablet

Patients already using a semaglutide injection sometimes ask about moving to a tablet. The Rybelsus prescribing information describes switching from the 0.5 mg Ozempic injection to 7 mg or 14 mg, starting one week after the last injection. The UK product information for Wegovy tablets describes switching from the 2.4 mg Wegovy injection to 25 mg daily, also one week after the last injection. Whether a switch is appropriate is a decision for your doctor.

Safety points that apply to both tablets

Some safety advice covers both medications. The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises stopping semaglutide medications, including Wegovy and Rybelsus, two months or more before trying for a pregnancy. It also lists persistent, severe stomach pain radiating to the back as a reason to seek urgent help.

The US label for Rybelsus carries a boxed warning about the risk of thyroid C-cell tumours. Your doctor will ask about your personal and family medical history before prescribing.

Choosing between the Wegovy pill and Rybelsus

The choice depends first on the condition being treated. For adults with type 2 diabetes, Rybelsus is one of several options a doctor may consider for blood sugar control. For adults whose main goal is weight management, the Wegovy pill is the semaglutide tablet approved for that purpose.

Some adults have both type 2 diabetes and obesity. In that situation, the doctor will consider which treatment is most appropriate for their overall health. Other options, such as Foundayo, Mounjaro and the Wegovy injection, may also be part of the discussion.

Insurance coverage in the UAE varies by policy. Coverage for these medications is often limited to type 2 diabetes or prediabetes with a qualifying diagnosis. Checking your individual coverage before starting treatment is advisable.

Both tablets are prescription medications. The decision to start either one should never be made alone. A medical review helps make sure that treatment is safe and appropriate for each person.
